What geobloggers are talking about...

After noting how many posts on PlanetGS I didn't understand (they were technical in nature), I wondered what percentage leaned toward tech. So, I did a quick and dirty review of PlanetGS and categorized posts (this was rough and others might have put things in different categories, rounding may lead to not 100%). Here's what I found:

26% - news, comments on news, NOT pr announcements, original content, editorial
19% - announcements, vendor PRs
14% - architecture, code (stuff I typically don't understand)
14% - "cool site"
9% - other - whines, book suggestions, quotes
9% - lists of links
7% - personal (where I'm going/not going/sports)
1% - jobs

Adena, can you break the first number out a little more? Passing on news from other sources vs original reporting and content?

Sean,

I'd describe the category as "more than passing on news" - it typically had some opinion attached to it. So, for example, not just that Google decided to not to put the model into GE, but why's that a knucklehead thing to do. Further, this is about "news news" not PR news. PRs and rehashes of them are in the "announcements, vendor PR" category. I hope that helps.

Good job, in general I agree with this review of PlanetGS. Why is the sum not a 100%?

Your taxonomy itself is a masterpiece. Did you come up with the categories? (I assume you did).

Answers to questions:

Rounding prevents the resulting percentages from adding to 100%, as noted in the post.

Yes, I came up with the categories - pretty much off the top of my head - but I added some as I went through the list of posts.
