San Antonio Paper Lauds GISPs

It's a nice article about a woman, Pamela Colby, who moved into GIS after a naval career. She runs her own firm and notes that certified folks made $12,000 more on average that those who are not certified. GISCI cites on its homepage the 2006/7 disparity at $8,500. Also of interest, the paper describes there being just "six GISP-certified experts in San Antonio and 1,621 in the world."

OK - I'll bite - is the salary differential due to the GISP certification or due to the 4+ years of professional experience required before one can obtain the certification.

I often wonder how long it would have really taken for aviation to 'get off the ground' if the Wright Bros. were 'certified' or had college educations. Just as I also wonder how much longer it would have taken for the slaves to be freed, if Abraham Lincoln had a college education.

Just a thought that perpetually sticks in ones' mind whenever this kind of topic comes up.

It's nice that they're making money off people though, I guess. Apparently, it's the American Way.

I wonder if the difference is due to the type of person that would obtain a GISP? Meaning that a GISP is the type of person that would maybe earn more money. The certification favors a motivated, self-propelled person. Along with the experience criteria, this kind of person would normally earn more anyway. Make sense?

oh, and you don't have to have a college degree to obtain a GISP certification. There is an experience category to specifically address that.

What's your feeling about commercial organizations that participate in kind or cash support to help in disasters and publicize those efforts?
No issues; it's good for the planet and good business.
It's ok, but does make me wonder about their motives.
It's pure marketing, and bothers me.
