Update: World Time Zone Watch: $13,000+

When I sat down for lunch with Michael Jones recently he seemed to have something on his mind. I figured it was about something I'd gotten wrong in covering Google, or maybe some news. Nope - he wanted to talk watches. The one below is no big deal, he explained. The epitome of geek geo-watches is the Tellurium Johannes Kepler Limited Edition. (99 made) Jones himself favors a perpetual calendar watch. (500 made)

What impressed me most, as he explained in detail the wonders of these devices, is that they are mechanical, not digital.

Yes, it's lovely, but few Dads or grads will get the watch which tells time on all 39 time zones.

Ah, yes. The lure of the quintessential...the downfall of so many tech programs. Why pay $13k when a Timex will do?

If you find a Timex watch that shows the Moon orbiting the Earth with it's sun-face properly oriented as a way to show in context the phases of the waxing and waning moon, that shows the continuously changing times of sunrise and sunset and the precise ever-changing line of illumination on the Earth's surface as it orbits the sun incorporating the effect of 22.5 degree planetary tilt, the orientation of the heavens WRT Earth (astrological configurations), and accurately indicates lunar and solar eclipses -- in addition to telling the time -- then by all means buy that Timex.

On the other hand, if these complications appeal to you and the idea of accurately computing and displaying all of them in a single, small mechanical wrist watch (the high-tech computer industry of the 18th and 19th centuries) running from a single mainspring pleases you as it does me, then the Tellurium Johannes Kepler from Ulysse-Nardin is the watch for you.

Oo. very kewl.

Personally, I'll get my info on ecliptic perturbations from a web-based search tool called "Google" that is invariably excellent at returning such information...at little or no cost to me.

And I'll know just when I have the time to look that arcanity up because my Timex Ironman takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'

BTW - if I had 13 large to drop on a bauble, carbon fiber would somehow factor into the equation.
