Microsoft's Touch Table

I guess I'm jaded having seen the Northrop Grumman "touch table" a few times. Yesterday Microsoft announced its own version at the Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital conference. It's called Microsoft Surface. And per the PR it's "the first in a new category of surface computing products from Microsoft that breaks down traditional barriers between people and technology. Surface turns an ordinary tabletop into a vibrant, dynamic surface that provides effortless interaction with all forms of digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects."

It should be out in public by year's end. One plus: it should be cheaper, right?

It continues to baffle me why it is that Microsoft takes the approach of bypassing end-user usability on a mass scale - by going into a development that's already been implemented by several others with Google Earth, before integrating usability on a mass scale. Is this just another sign of weakness for Microsoft's ability to compete, I wonder?

Take a look at CASA's implementation of table or even desk-top viewing at their site. This stuff has been done, and done extremely well in Google Earth.

And no offense, Adena - but you often seem to report exclusively on Microsoft. Why is this? I'm just curious. I rarely see an adequate comparison to technologies that compete with what you're reporting.
