NAVTEQ: End User Data Corrections May Take a Year or More

WRAL got a call from a dentist in North Carolina whose patients couldn't find his office because his street is not on GPS devices or Internet maps. Here's the response from NAVTEQ.

NAVTEQ spokeswoman Kelly Smith told WRAL that Pine State Street isn't listed in the U.S. Postal Service database. That's where they get the bulk of the information they provide to mapping companies.

Smith said they get about 80,000 requests a day for corrections or additions, so it takes time for new information to get to the public - perhaps a year or more. But she offered to try to “escalate" Godwin's request.

With all the articles about NAVTEQ and Tele Atlas vans in the media I suspect most consumers assume that's where the bulk of the data is collected. And, I suspect consumers also think that it's a simple (and quick) matter to update a street they note is missing. This is a nice reality check!

This delay is a convincing argument for another model .. like OpenStreetMap.

It may be the current reality, but with navigation devices flying off the shelves (http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_5984124) it's only a matter of time before the class action lawsuits pop up. The lawyers will sense fertile ground...

I agree with Allan. It's time for NAVTEQ turn to some of their record profits and hire more staff.

The problem is not just more staff or services like OpenStreetMap. There is a need for the data companies to validate the corrections. You don't want these changes being posted "Wikipedia" style by the general public. You don't want some 17 year old smart ass creating roads and navigating people into the middle of a lake.

But beyond the validation issue, there's the need to invent technology that can "publish" the incremental changes to the data. Then technology also needs to be invented to incorporate those changes into the data that resides in the devices. It has to be reindexed so that it can be searchable. Communication mechanisms need to be implemented so that those "published" changes can be received and stored on the devices.

None of this is trivial. But whoever cracks it will have created the "Nirvana" of navigation systems whereby changes to Points of Interest or Map Data are reported, verified and incorporated into the millions of devices that might use those changes, all within a matter of days instead of months.

Mike, that's an entirely uninformed opinion. You sound like a critic spreading FUD about Wikipedia in 2003 .. which to my mind is a good omen.
