Will Google's KML Search Change Geographic Data Search?
The extensive coverage of this little update (Infoworld, for example) suggests its significance may be larger. Will the fact that Google Earth, and soon Google Maps, will return KML files that meet search criteria mean that such a search will become a de facto standard? Ogle Earth notes that the search tool has that possibility: it searches not just KML on the Google Earth Community, but all over the Web and it allows a "search near" option.
So, will everyone now host KML files and index their sites? Will other companies update software to take advantage of this new search tool? Those will be good signs a de facto stanard is afoot.
