Google Earth and DoD

Federal Computer Week explains how DoD and others (some named, some not) use Google Earth Enterprise (a collection of Google goodies) to fuse geospatial data. Base cost: $100,000. The good news? Client software is free.

I have a question on this:


Interviewed in the Google booth, which resembles the bridge of the Starship Enterprise, Painter [director of Google Earth Federal] said that although the public Google Earth uses commercial satellite and geospatial imagery, Google Earth Fusion allows federal agencies to manipulate and integrate their own geospatial imagery with the company’s software tools.

Imagery or software? Isn't Google a member of OGC? Is it moving forward on implementing those standards such that it can do both with ease? Is that not the point of OGC? Is DoD pushing Google to implement such standards? See for example: NGA Announces Requirement for OGC and Complementary Standards

People are more familiar with the Google Earth client software, but upstream from the Google Earth client on your desk is the Google Earth Server software that streams data and further upstream, the Google Earth Fusion software that prepares geospatial data assets for streaming by building a rights managed, access controlled, performance oriented version of those assets.

Fusion supports data in OGC formats, other public formats, and vendor-specific formats (such as ESRI Shape files) and frequently the data provided as input comes from ArcIMS, Oracle Spatial, and other popular data management tools, though a "pile of files" is not uncommon.

As I understand it OGC has one encoding, GML. The rest of its standards are interface standards, glue to make apps work together. Or perhaps I have this wrong?

From database or file set IN any of an understood list of formats INPUT INTO Fusion and OUTPUT as newly created Google Earth servable data. (This is Fusion) This fused servable data is then READ by the Google Earth Server and WRITTEN to Google Earth clients locally or over a network.

When people use the Enterprise solution, they control all three parts and can visualize any number of databases as they may prefer with data of their selection; when people use the Pro and Free versions, the first two steps have already been done internally at Google and the Client is displaying 'the' Google Earth.

What about the existing Open Source and largely compliant applications like World Wind? It seems very odd that Google would be tagged for these funds while the same and better functionality could be achieved for far less than the 100k fusion cost.

No issues; it's good for the planet and good business.
