Bradford Washburn Dies at 96

Bradford Washburn, a big name here in Boston since he founded our now world famous Museum of Science, was known in scientific circles as renowned mountain photographer, explorer and cartographer. Washburn and his wife produced the first highly detailed, comprehensive relief map of Everest and its surroundings in in 1988 and he directed a 1999 effort to remeasure that mountain; it was found to be seven feet higher than previously thought.

Yes, he was a climber. It takes a strong personality to get to the top, and he was, by far, one of the strongest. He even bagged a few peaks in his day.
