Skyhook Tech in MP3 Player

Skyhook Wireless (the Loki folks) announced at CES that its technology will be in a new MP3 player from Korean manufacturer ReignCom. It says in the (PDF only - WHY??) press release it's a first!

Skyhook Wireless Inc., provider of the Wi-Fi Positioning System™ (WPS), today announced at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that ReignCom, a Korean manufacturer of media devices, will launch the Wi-Fi enabled iriver W10 portable media player with the Wi-Fi Positioning System from Skyhook Wireless. This device will be the first commercially available media player with location awareness, and will provide consumers with accurate location, enabling them to easily find places and things around them.

iRiver put in WPS because of customer demand and the business case. Their W10 is specifically targeting the hip urban youth who want maps and locaiton information but who live/play indoors and in cities where GPS doesn't work well. After field testing, its the customers who thought it provided the better experience.

And just as importantly, the addition of the software only WPS to the pre-existing Wi-FI system vs the additional silicon, space, cost and power of a GPS chip lets them price it much more competitively.
