WVU's GeoVirtual Lab Brings VR to GIS

Technology from West Virginia University’s GeoVirtual Laboratory (GVL) and Department of Geology and Geography in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences may be at the forefront of real virtual reality.

The tech is called Virtual Reality Geographic Information Systems (VRGIS) and draws on teh Web and VR to share inforamation, per Lab Direcotry Vic Baker. The technology is interesting to GISers in part because of its integrative nature and it's ability to host links and "further information." The lab is looking for partners and licensees. The most interesting part about GVL is our acquisition of a FLEX system that allows for immersive visualization. We hope to have articles on our use of the FLEX system for GIS in the next ArcNews and on the SkethUp webpage.

While I wish GVL could claim the "beyond Photosynth" statement the technologies are not the same as the GVL work is more focused on Augmented Reality than virtual scenes. The AR work is more closely related to VRGIS, a tech transfer company that has been spawned from work over the last 6 years.
