Trading Imagery to Google for Software

Jackson Couty, Oregon has (Mail Tribune) traded its latest aerial images to Google for use in Google Earth for $3000 in software that "helps create 3-D representations of buildings on the two-dimensional aerial photos that the county has already taken."

Oregon is one of the first states to partner with Google to provide local aerial photos, which are of higher quality than the photos Google currently gets from another national company, said [Keith Massie, the county's geographic information system manager Keith] Massie.

Will others follow?

"one of the first" I guess means that being the 7th state is still in the top 20% of states (NJ, MA, NY, MO, IN, and ME apparently doing this already). Perhaps they mean one of the first counties (Westchester NY being another). These imagery-sharing partnerships are old hat now, but still interesting to see the spin.

It would be news to compile a survey of Google’s public partners to compare what they get in return, especially since most of them can't use Google Earth in their agencies without paying $400/user/year....unless they cut a deal?
