County Liability Slows Move to GIS

Minidoak, ID County Assessor Max Vaughn wants  to upgrade from the AutoCAD to GIS.

“What we can do with GIS is we can actually take our map boundaries and overlay it with GPS maps and see if it’s accurate,” Vaughn said.

The issue holding things back seems to be one of liability. There's concern the county could be sued if data are altered after they leave the county website.
EPA Launches EnviroAtlas
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last week released EnviroAtlas, a web-based interactive tool that integrates over 300 separate data layers and helps decision makers understand the implications of planning and policy decisions on our fragile ecosystems. It's designed for professionals and citizens and a version for mobile is planned.
Anoka Opens its Data
Anoka County, MN has decided to remove fees for some of its GIS data. The data files (geodatabase and shapefile) are accessed from the main GIS site data site via an FTP site and one must agree to a "terms and interest" disclaimer.
