Nokia has teamed up with China's leading location-based service Jiepang to demonstrate NFC social check-in services.

Checkin involves swiping the phone over a poster to garner all the rewards of a typical checkin - location sharing, points, etc.

PlaceSpeak is a new, location-based community consultation platform designed to authentically connect people with location-specific issues. ...By signing up on the site using an existing web account such as Facebook or Google, the user is asked to validate their address. From there, the user is able to click on issues submitted for discussion by governments and other organizations, and to share thoughts and ideas with neighbours on the issues affecting their community.

The first users are in British Columbia.

Book Crawler, an app that lets users keep track of and organize what they're reading, has added onlocation-based features using Skyhook's Local Faves

The checkins mean that you can find the most popular books in an area.
