Guatemala
UN-SPIDER held a review of the country’s GIS and offered recommendations for moving forward. The recommendations “will allow Guatemala to institutionalize its capacity to use space-based information to respond to disasters provoked by floods, hurricanes, droughts, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes and other hazards.”

Nigeria
Kogi State Governor Ibrahim Idris reports speding over N3 billion on erosion control in various parts of the state. That sum was noted while he announced the formation of state’s GIS Centre, which cost N205 million. The idea, in part is the use the latter, to better manage erosion, and one would expect, save money.

Xu Deming, vice minister of the Ministry of Land and Resources and director of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, said that China’s geographic information industry witnessed rapid development during the [just completed] 11th Five-year Plan.
The annual increase of the geographic information industry’s industrial scale exceeded 25 percent and the total output value stood at nearly 100 billion yuan in 2010. Currently, more than 400,000 people are working in the geographic information industry and new geographic information enterprises are established almost every day.
By the end of the 12th Five-year plan all prefecture level cities should be in digital form.

Volunteers from 10 Kansas communities have completed the initial training in a new GeoTech Community Service Learning Program. The first “graduates” are adults (it’s unclear if they are educators or not) who are expected to help youth learn about and use the technologies including GPS and GIS.

Casper College’s advanced GIS students provided most of the maps on the Natrona County Parks section of the county’s website, http://www.natrona.net. Many are working toward certification in GIS (not clear what sort of certification, but perhaps a certificate?). There’s also integration with local 4-H kids who are recording interviews with seniors who remember features no longer standing in the parks.

The South Dakota Board of Education has approved a precision technology program at Mitchell Technical Institute in Mitchell. Per Mitchell Tech President Greg Von Wald “precision technology is an exploding industry, dealing with such things as GPS, GIS and geospatial mapping.” The programs will open to students in the fall of 2011.
