Reader Jay pointed me to TeamSurv. I’ll let that site tell its story:

Welcome to TeamSurv, the do-it-yourself survey project.

TeamSurv is a self-help community that shares depth and position information, collected from the boat’s own GPS and depth sounder, as you go about your normal cruising.
...
TeamSurv is the public face of the EU sponsored CoSuDEC project, which is investigating the use of crowd sourcing to log position and depth data from seagoing vessels, and then to process that data to enhance the quality of nautical charts, and data sets for GIS systems as used by coastal engineers, for example.

The project consortium is a powerful blend of companies experienced in data logging, charts and GIS systems; software development; and sales and marketing. Bringing together these three aspects gives a project of this type the breadth of experience necessary to succeed. The project is supported by the GSA, who see it as an example of how European SME’s can exploit the technological benefits of EGNOS and (when available) Galileo, increasing Europe’s presence in the GNSS applications sector.

The project’s duration is two years (until the end of 2011), but after that the intention is that the consortium will carry on with TeamSurv as an ongoing project.

Walking into the Bayfront Hilton on Sunday, where the EdUC was held, I was handed an Altyryx CD with the question “Would you like some software to help your GIS run faster?” I do not believe that’s what the software does.

How did Esri note the change from ESRI and from “EEE ESS ARE EYE” to “Ezri” (or as Dangermond says it: “essri”)? The former was not noted in the plenary. The latter was noted by Dangermond in the plenary; he does not care how you say it.

Quite packed for the Monday morning plenary. There were no extra screens as there have been in the past midway back in the hall. There were just three gigantic ones up front.

To simulate working at a Starbucks, what looked like a real Starbucks barista brought John Caulkins a drink on stage at the plenary.

A pedicab downtown had a DigitalGlobe ad on it: Can you… See more. Known more. Do more.

A large number of maps at the Map Gallery had “Legend” in the legend box. Many others did not seem to have titles.

Directions Media editors are covering the 2010 ESRI International User Conference this week. Today’s podcast is their reaction to this year’s plenary session which typically sets the agenda for the rest of the week. Executive Editor Adena Schutzberg described the plenary this way in a blog post: “The ESRI UC 2010 Plenary was short on jaw-dropping announcements, but solid in message: ArcGIS is a complete system for GIS and you should use it!” She and Editor in chief Joe Francica share their candid thoughts.
