Jessican Dolcourt finds things to like in the Bing implementation, but still places it behind Google in part due to interface and available data. And, the Bing version did give more “weird” directions, though it does “bing” to warn the driver that directions will be spoken imminently.

Paul Taylor (Chief Strategy Officer at the Center for Digital Government, but Gov Tech does not make that easy to find, why?) asks that at GovTech and concludes:

It isn’t that surfacing government data is bad, but it comes with a bow wave. The more data feeds, sets and sources that are surfaced, the larger the wave. Government sets the wave in motion for all the right reasons and now finds itself with an unpaid mandate of its own creation - providing context.

In a recent analysis, Daniel Castro, senior analyst of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, wrote, “Although Web sites like Data.gov provide tools for users to rate the quality of data sets, agencies responsible for maintaining data sets should take on more responsibility for noting any data quality issues. For example, agencies should make clear any known limitations of data sets, such as poor survey response rates, grossly inaccurate data or outdated information.”

Ball State University geography students have found that Muncie, Indiana has a larger proportion of stray animals south of the river. Also south of the river? More poverty and higher residential density. The findings mirror an earlier study. Per Matt Wilson, an assistant professor of geography and emerging media expert who led students in mapping calls to a cash strapped animal shelter:

“This is a social justice issue. ...We are all implicated in this and we need to recognize our complicitness, including Ball State.”

All three Democratic candidates for Arkansas Commissioner for State Lands wants new technology and apparently GIS. Here’s how one paper distilled their comments (including several different names for the tech, unclear if that’s candidate error or reporting error):

Bryant:

“On the (land commissioner’s) Web site, there’s a long list of legal descriptions (of delinquent properties for auction),” he said. “The county assessors have mapped most of the parcels — if those maps can be integrated with the Web site, people will be able to look and actually see a piece of property (through utilities such as Google maps).”

Berg:

Berg said he wants to provide graphic information system (GIS) mapping technology, similar to Internet software giant Google Inc.’s Google maps, so that a search at the land commissioner’s Web site will show the actual location of state-owned properties.

Berg said present locations are given as legal descriptions, but GIS mapping would provide a location by street or county road address.

Davenport

Davenport said other suggestions from his opponents to use Geography Information Systems to map properties seized by the state because of unpaid taxes and online payment of taxes are both existing technologies that he would not be opposed to, provided they are employed in a cost effective manner and bring benefit to the system.

Pitney Bowes Business Insight (PBBI) last week announced it will launch a geospatial content marketplace, which it describes as Data as a Service (DaaS). PBBI will partner with WeoGeo for the service, which is expected to go live in June.
Directions Magazine editors contemplate the hurdles to success and how, or if, this marketplace will in fact be an iTunes for geodata.
