The BBC suggested listeners hoping to better follow the weather forecast consult maps to be sure they understand the reports. The reports were changed based on feedback they were not clear. The BBC added in more detail about regions, but was unsure if everyone could locate them. Hence, the pointer to the map. Reactions to the new reports and the maps is mixed (or perhaps, partly couldy?).

“I’m not suing. I don’t want money. I want to save lives, and because of that I’m not giving up.”
Cher Hollar’ on her efforts to make maps of local golf courses in Lee County, FL available to emergency personnel. Her husband died there when first responders could not find him. Since then, the course has provided maps to the local EMS and guaranteed an escort when help is required. Still, there are no laws on the books for courses to have emergency plans.

Two tidbits that are great follow ups to the session Joe and I did on “Working with the News Media and “Using Social Media” at the Location Intelligence Conference last week.
First, a study by Jakob Nielson on the Usability of social network postings and RSS feeds. It’s pretty ugly out there!

Second, a great “discussion” on the best practices for using social media releases (SMR) that starts with a post on Search Engine Watch by Greg Jarboe. Be sure to read the comments which suggest many, many folks don’t know what the SMRs are or their purpose. (I’ve seen one from a big player in our space and was sorely disappointed. They used it wrong and worse, never replied to my queries about the release. Don’t let this happen to you!)

At a press conference today, concurrent with the BE Inspired Awards Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, Bentley Systems CEO, Greg Bentley, commented on his observations of the economic climate for his company and whether stimulus money provided by countries worldwide was having a positive impact for his business. "Stimulus is helping…but, infrastructure professionals are having a hard time. We are not seeing any upturn. Remember, infrasturure isn’t for stimulus but it is for sustaining, said Bentley. ‘Projects that are shovel-ready have already had their design work."
Bentley’s remarks were based on the fact that the company can track software usage and that those usage levels were down at this time.
