TomTom iPhone Apps Out - World Abuzz; TomTom Quiet
There were some 150 news articles about this weekend's roll out of the highly anticipated TomTom iPhone app in Australia, the UK and the U.S. The excitement is in part because this app unlike others, does not have a recurring monthly charge. In the U.S. it runs $100. TomTom has no mention of the app on its corporate website and its iPhone site was rather bare (with no link to the app in the App Store) as of 8:30 am EST. The video (advertisement) there still says "coming soon to the app store." This illustrates how corporate communications have changed!
For those interested here's Mashable's coverage with a video.

iPhone App Store: Teachable Moments
While I have mixed feelings about Apple's decision to approve (or not) apps to run on its iPhone platform, I do think the stories coming out of those decisions are educational. Take for example the recent "available"/"not available" status of the Offender Locator App. The app (in free and paid versions) locates sex offenders within 5 miles of the device's location.
The paid app was in, then out because it may have broken California laws. For now, the California data has been removed and the app is back while things get sorted out. This story highlights a few issues for developers (and everyone else):
- just because you can present data based on location, doesn't mean the data itself is legal to share
- different states have different laws on the books, so building a nationwide (or even worldwide app) may require some extra research and/or legal fees
- a big media discussion like this provides great advertising
- you can serve the greater good: 10% of proceeds from the app go to "stop child predator" organizations
- a new version (with hopefully all the legal issues sorted out and new features) may warrant a doubling in price ($.99 to $1.99)

An Online Map App "Optimized for Safari"
The article in the local paper touted how the new mapping app showing state and local parks and attractions was the first of it kind in the state of West Virginia. I was more interested in the badge below the Google Maps-based app which reads: "Optimized for Safari." That made me think there were different apps based on your browser. So I open the app in FireFox and Internet Explorer and found the same badge. Interesting choice.

Podcast: In the News - State Stimulus Sites and User Generated Corrections
This week two news items peaked our interest: Good Jobs First, a Washington research center, released a report giving mediocre grades to state websites that aim to be transparent about the distribution of federal stimulus dollars. One of the criteria considered? Maps. Second, is there a trend in local news related to sat nav? Is there a move away from "two techs capturing data" stories to how users can get involved with collection and update?
