MapSherpa; Maps (not GIS) for Outdoor People
Back in 2005 DM Solutions' name was on many lips as one of the most prominent developers and implementors of open source GIS. The Ottawa-based firm was tied in to the early efforts to create what is now the Open Source Geospatial Foundation, OSGEO. More recently DM Solutions has been quiet. It was time for a rethink of the business and the way ahead. And, that brings us to MapSherpa.com, the company's new consumer focused site. (press release) That's right - the one time B2B provider is now in the B2C space. The backend is still the open source code for which the company is known.

MSNBC.com Acquires Adrian Holovaty's EveryBlock
The microlocal company and app grew out of a Knight Foundation grant that ended in June 2009 and grew into the epitome of a high tech hyperlocal website. It's framework is open source and uses many open source geospatial tools. The data is fed to the site in as automated a fashion as possible. Further, the team worked with many localities to make data more available to the site and thus other sites. EveryBlock now has sites for 15 cities, four in beta; it slowly and smartly added them a few at at a time over it's year and a half of existence. (Wow, is that all?)
There was no official statement about the terms. AOL bought another hyper local site, Patch, in June for $7 million.
PaidContent reports that the Washington Post is shutting down its hyperlocal standalone site, Loudon Extra.

Podcast: In the News - State Stimulus Sites and User Generated Corrections
This week two news items peaked our interest: Good Jobs First, a Washington research center, released a report giving mediocre grades to state websites that aim to be transparent about the distribution of federal stimulus dollars. One of the criteria considered? Maps. Second, is there a trend in local news related to sat nav? Is there a move away from "two techs capturing data" stories to how users can get involved with collection and update?
