Open Source for America Launches
The group of some 70 organizations (Sun, Oracle, O'Reilly, EFF, Pentaho...) have banded together to form Open Source for America. The goal: to "serve as a unified voice for the promotion of open source software in the U.S. Federal Government arena.
Dennis Byron at Seeking Alpha describes it at a front group for enterprise software vendors.

On Falling Profits, TomTom Plans for More Cost Savings
TomTom said Wednesday that said second quarter net profit fell 61%. In response the company plans to increase its "cost savings" target by 50%. Number still beat expectations.

Does Every Rep Need to Provide a Map of Recovery Money in their District?
Monday Congressman Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., launched one, based on Google Maps My Map, that coveras New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District. Uh, should this not be done at the state level or above? Just asking about duplicate efforts, something I thought we were trying to avoid in geospatial...
I'd also like to see the map note its data source and a link to a feed of that data. (Hopefully that's how this map is made, from authoritative data from the federal government?)

74% of Facebook Ad Revenue from Local Ads
Clay Dillow writes about that in Fast Company, noting ad research firm Borrell Associates estimates the $310 million in ad revenue expected for Facebook in during 2009, 74% will come from local, location-based ads. Compare that to MySpace's 27% and social networking at 20% from LBS ads. So, if true, Facebook is the big social network LBS winner thus far.

South Dakota Makes GPS Maps of Public Land Maps Available Free
The South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Department is offering up the digital maps of federal, state and government leased lands to provide another option beyond the paper maps and South Dakota Public Walk-In Atlas. The program provides downloadable files for newer Garmin, Lowrance and Magellan GPS units.

Just last night I read an editorial that suggested that GIS had stepped into the role that surveyors cover in recent years. "GIS professionals started edging into areas that had previously been relegated to professional surveyors." (POB Editorial, July 2009)
