The hyperlocal news website, YourStreet.com, has discontinued the use of maps. Citing costs, an email from the company stated, "Supporting mapping of each article was just too expensive to maintain, but rest assured that you’ll continue to find the latest local news for your city or town on YourStreet.  As an added bonus, you’ll find the pages load much faster than before."

Because Google announces most of its news via blogs, sometimes I for one miss announcements that deserve a look from a geographic perspective. Case in point: Tuesday’s announcement of Google Public Data via blog, covered here by the Washington Post.

Google announced yesterday that is has become the default location-based application embedded within Mozilla Firefox Beta 3.5 (beta 4). The announcement stated that Google’s Location Service, the same used in the My Location feature in other Google products (Latitude), will be used by Firefox. The statement released by the company said that now "developers can, with users’ permission, gain access to their approximate location without requiring any additional plug-ins or setting configurations."
