India Planning its own "Google Earth"

Johns Hopkins Research Maps Affected Cyclone Nargis (Burma) Regions

Researchers at Johns Hopkins' Bloomberg School of Public Health, in conjunction with others at CIESEN (Columbia University), Lehman College, and the City University of New York (CUNY) have released a report, using GIS, to show that 3.2 million Burmese where affected by Cyclone Nargis.

DARPA Gives Go Ahead to Underground SatNav Mapping

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) gave the ok to Failure Analysis to build the Defense Underground Mapping Satellite Tracking and Ranging (DUMSTR) system. The company proposed $100,000,000.00/year proposal to the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) in February, 2008. The project is a a low-earth-orbiting, satellite-based, underground mapping matrix that will use existing Air Force satellite technology from the Defense Mapping Satellite Program (DMSP) and the Global Positioning System (GPS). The technology will allow the mapping of underground civil and military facilities around the world and "provide geological science information for plate tectonics, underground volcano structure and growth of lava chambers promising to increase the likelihood of future earthquake prediction capability."

"You could say that the city is showing common sense in not trying to take a useless step."

Professor Ralph Stein, who tracks Homeland Security issues at Pace University, on New York City's decision not to blur images of the area in Google Maps. He made the comment in yet another Google Maps censorship story this time at WCBS-TV. In addition to this statement, the TV station provided another valuable statement:

"Google uses images from a state database, which is why Westchester was able to censor them. Yahoo! Images come from a private sector company."
