In the world of marathon running there's a group known as the "50 staters" - their goal is to run marathons in all fifty states. Some do it twice! You meet them at small and large marathons and all have great stories.
The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon collects runners. In seven years it boasted runners from 49 states and Puerto Rico, but wanted the full set. The state that was missing? Rhode Island. An e-mail to running clubs offering a waved $85 registration for the first two runners from the state brought a commitment in just a few hours.
Oh, and when you see Gary Smith of Green Mountain Geographics, a contributor to Directions Magazine and long time GIS-er, congratulate him on his completion of the Boston Marathon yesterday.
