A Map for the Season

An old tradition, posting a paper map of places in the Schenectady, NY region that were looking for donations at holiday time, has gone online as a Google Maps Mashup. The Giving Map from Fountains Geospatial provides a bit of PR for the company and a service to the community.

Keeping an Eye on Rolta

Things are looking bright for India-based Rolta. CMD KK Singh aims to make Rolta a $1 billion firm by 2010.

The next technology of note, reports the Business Standard, is sensors. The company plans to manufacture them at a new plant in Mumbai.

Further down in the article is this intiguing statement.
It has also created a portfolio of games and animation content, which covers areas such as Game Environment modelling (using GIS data and imagery), Object Modelling (vehicles, weapons, props, etc), and models of characters such as soldiers, sports personalities and film stars.

Disaster Planning by Non-Profit: Volunteers and Interns do GIS

The Daily Breeze is reporting that Palos Verdes Estates (California) Police Department has contracted with a local non-profit, PVNET, to put together a disaster planning GIS. Of note:

"We use volunteers and interns and we're a nonprofit," said Ted Vegvari, director of the Rancho Palos Verdes-based organization.

Vegvari said a private contractor could charge five times more than what the nonprofit is offering [about $6000] to develop geographic information system maps.

I wonder how many other localities tap into non-profits to do this sort of work?
