"Convergence is a nice, dandy word, but it means industries colliding"

So said Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo in an article published in Mobile Tech Today referring to the emergence of Google and Apple in the cellular phone space.

Industries colliding...have you seen it? GIS and search; digital geospatial data and cellular telecommunications. Web mapping and neogeography. Reminds me of the days of mini-VAXes and desktop computers. Mainframe image processing and desktop mapping.

And then there is the MISO (Microsoft, IBM, SAP, Oracle) group gobbling up BI firms...spatially-enabling business intelligence. GIS and desktop mapping are not just colliding with enterprise apps at the high end and neogeography at the consumer end but the inevitable enveloping of location technology into everything, long prognosticated, is rapidly upon us. It's one big fusion reaction. Next week we will air an interview with Kanwar Chadha, founder of SiRF Technologies in which he states that "location will be native to everything we do."

O'Reilly Offers Interview with Vincent Tao on Live Search Launch in China

The interview comes on the heels of the Multimap announcement yesterday.

Tidbits of note:

In addition to most VE features in USA, China release offers the public transit feature for bus and train commuters.

Our road map data is coming from AutoNavi, a Chinese leading data provider for on-line and navigation maps.

Our VE API will be available for enterprise and mashup users in a not too distant future.

The map data is not allowed to leave the border.

ESRI in Food Logistics 100

Yes, that's right, there's a Food Logistics 100. It " features top technology solution providers that serve the needs of a unique segment of the food service industry. The list is compiled through end-user nominations. Each company listed is top in their field for assisting food, beverage and consumer packaged goods' companies to transform their supply chains."

Thales Working on Indoor "GPS"

Reuters and others report on the Indoor Positioning System that uses UltraWide Band (UWB) to locate individuals inside buildings. The research work is being done with a UK fire departement.

Ubisense in the UK has been using UWB for some time for indoor positioning. Dick Newell of Smallworld fame is a director.
