EC Wants More Time to Explore TomTom/TA Deal

It sounds like no big deal, but the European Commission wants more time for a "Phase 2" investigation. That give them 125 days (though it may not need them all) to complete the review. TomTom extended its tender until March 31 to enable that timeframe.

Google Earth Lifespan Short?

Duncan Riley at TechCrunch suggests that Google moving much of the functionality from Earth to Maps (note: terrian and multiple people editing the same map most recently) means Earth's days are numbered:

As Google Maps takes on more and more of the functionality of Google Earth the appeal of Earth must diminish. It also makes sense that Google would rather grow and sustain a web product over a software download. Google Earth will still be with us for some time to come, but how long is now up to Google, and I’m betting that Google is already looking at ending support sometime in the next year or two as Google Maps becomes everything Google Earth now is, but online and without the download.

I personally find GE overkill for my very 2D needs, but it sure feels like the rest of the world operates in 3D.

NASA's New Antarctic Map Online

The Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica (LIMA) developed by NASA, the National Science Foundation and the British Antarctic Survey is now available. For now it's only available at USGS but the mosiac of 1,100 hand-selected photos will appear in Google Earth in time.

ESRI Hires Director of Product Management

Two things happened at ESRI that don't happen too often: it hired a senior staffer and it sent out a press release about a hire.

"Dirk Gorter, formerly of Symantec Corporation, has joined ESRI's senior corporate management team in the newly created position of director of product management." The position as I understand it will focus on ESRI product development process and bringing its products to new markets in the enterprise space. Gorter plans to use "agile product management methods" at ESRI.

No, we are not at AU this year...

We've received a few e-mails asking if we are at Autodesk University, going on this week in Las Vegas and where to find coverage. Our staff is enjoying the week after Thanksgiving at home for a change!

There is coverage out there. Cadopolis offers its aggregration of feeds (think PlanetGS for CAD) (many bloggers are at AU). There's also as well as an aggregation of AU specific feeds.

And, as always, we welcome coverage from any geo-folks at the event - just drop us an e-mail with what you saw, heard, learned, thought was interesting, etc.
