Alexander County's (Central High School in Taylorsville, NC) students used their GIS class to put together and soon to publish a 160 page atlas of their county. Created using donated ESRI software and donated county computers the now PDF version will be pulished (1000 copies) in December.

Daniel Civco is a professor in the Department of Natural Resources Management and Engineering, at UConn. He received a National Award for Excellence in College and University Teaching in the Food and Agricultural Sciences on Sunday. The award is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service and given at a meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC).

Civco is director of the University’s Center for Land Use Education and Research and got his bachelors, masters and PhD at the school.

Oddly, I read about the award Saturday in a story dated Monday. The name of the UConn paper: Advance. Indeed!

Yes, NOAA is 200 years old. Who created NOAA, the country's first science agency? My personal favorite of our founding fathers: TJ, Thomas Jefferson, #3. He apparently kept daily weather records at Monitcello. He also wrote his own Bible...

The original job of NOAA was to map the coastline, but now it's might broader. There's lots of special goodies on the celebration website.
