Top Inventions of 2007: One without geo, another few with...

Time notes the top inventions of 2007. On top the iPhone, which we all know, doesn't have GPS. Also on the list, a long talked about device that police can shoot from their cars into those of chassees. The device includes GPS, so the car can be tracked. I'm not sure how it rates a 2007 nod as it will not be available until next year. In the "remote sensing" department we find HortiBot, a robot weeder that uses a camera to identify weeds by shape and orientation of their leaves. Oh, and Google Street View is there, too.

Quote of the Day - Hillary..."If you like a good view..."

Peter Hillary, son of Sir Edmund Hillary, an explorer and climber himself was speaking at Trimble Dimensions, Trimble's User Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. His droll comment brought laughter to the audience..

"The first thing you notice on the top of Mt. Everest is the great view. If you like a good view…you really should go there." He also answered the question that perhaps everyone wanted to know about Everest...

"Why go there in the first place…you are pushing yourself to extremes. It was about functioning in critical circumstances while clinging to the edge of death…it's about managing fear and anxiety."

Why Microsoft Should Enter GPS Space

Seeking Alpha contributor Dean Reese suggests that Microsoft is the only player can bring all the pieces of the geospatial game together and should get right on it.

GIS Day and GIS Day Coverage Approach

This from the Murfreesboro Post in Tennessee:

OIT [Rutherford County’s Office of Information Technology] employees will give a presentation on how GIS can be used in everyday life using Google Earth. They will show students how to locate global landmarks, like the Pyramids, Grand Canyon, Disney World and their own school, using the technology.

I wonder what percentage of GIS Day presentations will include Google Earth/Microsoft Live Search Maps/Virtual Earth? I wonder how many will highlight geospatial technologies as a possible carreer? I wonder how many will tie GIS to other disciplines like surveying or remote sensing? I wonder how different it will be from the first GIS Day?

GCN Reviews MapInfo 9.0

The very short, non-technical review can be summed up with this thesis:

"We were pleased with the enhanced features that Version 9.0 had to offer over Version 8.5 version, which we looked at in 2006."

Podcast: NSGIC Initiatives - Imagery and Transportation of the Nation

Some of the discussions that were held at the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) meeting this past September in Madison, Wisconsin, focused on major initiatives to support public/private cooperation. Imagery for the Nation and Transportation for the Nation were two of them. Editor-in-chief Joe Francica provides an interview with John Auble, Director of Tele Atlas's public sector division and a member of NSGIC's Transportation for the Nation Working Group.

The podcast is 20 minutes and was recorded on October 26, 2007.
