Seybold to Orange..."There's more money in LBS"

Orange, the European cellular operator, is focusing more on mobile TV more than LBS. Raphael Goumot of Orange said that, "The value proposition is clearer. LBS is more complex. Too many issues to deal with…security, usability." Andrew Seybold, who was moderating a panel session at SiRF's Location 2.0 Summit flatly predicted that Orange would make more money in LBS.

Cal Fire Mashups: Sources?

Many news watchers are noting all the (Google Maps mostly) mashups of information on the California fires. Great. My concern, expressed in a comment at Poynter.org, is that the source of the points on the map are not documented (at least in a way I can find). Why is this? Is it a tech issue? A time issue? A "journalists don't know to do that" issue?

Another Step Toward Point and Find Location Based Data

While here in the U.S. geo-types are at GEOINT or CTIA, Nokia is doing its thing in Finland. At its event, The Way We Live Next, the company is showing off its newly acquired Point and Find system. The technology, acquired from PIXTO earlier this year, allows a phone user to point at something - cinema, restaurant, person perhaps and get information about them. How? Well the phone has a camera, GPS and Internet access for starters.

I guess this is another reason they need to buy NAVTEQ.

Geospatial Tools and the California Fires

Computerworld offers a look at the geospatial tecnologies being used to fight the ongoing California fires and others in development.

Firefighters have begun using various GPS technologies to map out the progress of wildfires over the last several years, [spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection MaryAnn] a Aldrich said.

I believe that means GPS is used both to locate fires and equipment and to navigate (esppecially for visiting firemen) to resources such as hydrants. GIS get a plug, too:

Glenn Nader, the natural resources adviser for the University of California Agricultural Extension in Yuba City, said one technology that continues to help firefighters is geographic information system (GIS) mapping data, which can be combined in layers to provide details on topography, fire history, roads, access and population. "It gives you kind of a plan," Nader said.

Other technologies noted: reverse 911 (do people know what that is?), enhanced modeling tools and real time data solutions.

The Deloitte Fast 500 was released today. It lists "North America’s fast-growing technology, media, telecommunications and life sciences companies in terms of percentage revenue growth over five years."

GeoEye was listed as 185. list (pdf).
