He [Bernard Gracy, vice president of strategy and business development at Pitney Bowes] declined to say which federal agencies the newly integrated company [Pitney Bowes/MapInfo] will target but said geospatial software is increasingly used in public safety, homeland security and disease management applications.

Still MapInfo offers the MapInfo technology will take it into competition with ESRI in the federal sector.

When TomTom announced it would buy Tele Atlas, this past summer, I waited eagerly to hear about the deal on Marketplace, the Public Radio International daily business show. I didn't hear about it. So, yesterday, when Nokia jumped to buy on NAVTEQ I wondered if it'd make the grade. It did. I guess Nokia's bigger name and the fact that the money was roughly 3x that of the TomTom deal was significant.

Analysts believe that Nokia's $8.1 billion offer for Navteq could change the industry landscape and make the combined company of TomTom and Tele Atlas a takeover target itself.
