It was reported some weeks ago that a settlement conference was offered to try to settle this action out of court. I read in the latest MAPPS newsletter (pdf) that the U.S. government rejected the offer.

Also in that issue is the President’s Message, by MAPPS president Kurt Allen. Among other things he questions why AAG et al. put forward the amicus brief in opposition to the MAPPS et al. litigation and offers some suggested answers.

I have no information on what if anything occurred last Friday, Feb 23, when the hearing was to begin after several postponements.

In today’s podcast, we explore the possible ramifications of Google’s recently announced KML Search capability. Is it a big deal? Will it alter the way we decide how and what tool we use to publish geospatial data? Will making KML an OGC/international standard help the geospatial community feel more comfortble with Google’s reach into our arena? We discuss these issues and answer some questions you might have about publishing KML files to make them findable by “the web of places.” The podcast is 12 minutes (~ 4 Mb) and was recorded February 26, 2007.

The Wall Street Journal reported today that Kohlberg, Kravis Roberts (KKR) and Texas Pacific Group have entered into an agreement to buy TXU, the mega-utility company, in the largest ever leveraged buyout for $32 billion. Remember that just last year, Texas Pacific Group was engaged in the buyout of Intergraph Corporation. Intergraph, of course, has a very large installed base of utility customers. Texas Electric Delivery (formerly ONCOR) is a subsidiary of TXU and an Intergraph customer for geospatial products. And Intergraph, it should be mentioned, is also a large supplier of plant design software. So, this is obviously a very significant connection for Intergraph. Leveraged buyouts of this magnitude don’t happen overnight and I just wonder how much of this played into the Intergraph acquisition scenario.

Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) has seen its stock climb from just over $35 per share at the beginning of 2006 to over $55 per share at the beginning of February, split its stock 2 for 1 last Friday. It capped off a two week period in which they closed on the acquisitions of @Road on Feb. 16 and INHPO on Feb. 14.

“Strategy Analytics also found that the MapQuest site is the most sought-after web location on mobile devices followed by Google.”

That was actually a bit of a footnote to the main point of the article in Telecommunications Online. The article noting how a panel deemed Yahoo the best “mobile web experience.” Now, does the demand for MapQuest (which is free, but requires airtime) mean more or less demand for online services like TeleNav?
