Binghampton University (State University of New York) set out to map holiday spirit by classifying holiday lights displays across the city. Teams went out to score them on a 0-4 scale and today the results are to be crunched into “topo maps” by the univeristy’s GIS.

David Sloan Wilson, distinguished professor in the Departments of Biology and Anthropology at Binghamton University see the five day study as adding to an initiative he directs “called the Binghamton Neighborhood Project, which seeks to create a general infrastructure for studying and improving the quality of life in the City of Binghamton and to provide a model for other communities.” Wilson intends to use the map on his holiday cards.
