Clayton (County Georgia) Sheriff Victor Hillwants to implement COMPSTAT now. It has a $100,000 grant to implement it. The issue? Commission Chairman Eldrin Bell says COMPSTAT is just part of a complete GIS and that the county should implement that instead.
I’ve heard of municipalities forgoing GIS for say oblique imaging and recently heard rumor that GIS is on the back burner in my city of Somerville since COMPSTAT is taking all the resources. Do some of these “special use” GISs prevent implementation of more broadly serving offering?

What I found the most interesting was the way the city uses GIS for fire hydrants. They punch the information into a computer, and then they find a place where they need a fire hydrant, usually by a large building. They record everything, the color of the fire hydrant, how tall it is. I’m actually considering being a GIS employee some day because it’s all very interesting.
