The agreement allows researchers to tap into SPOT data for a discounted fee.

The collaboration between UCSB and Terra Image USA is breaking down the barriers to the academic use of commercial satellite imagery, cutting the cost by nearly 90 percent. ...Terra Image USA, in collaboration with UCSB, is offering all U.S. universities a special, subscription-only service that provides unprecedented pricing for archived and programmed SPOT imagery for academic research purposes.

Details are here. (Oddly, that link is not in the press release.) The page details a $10,000 subscription per campus that then allows for discounted scenes.

MapInfo Corp. Chairman John Cavalier signed a new contract that continues to pay him a $220,000 annual salary through the February 2007 annual meeting. Atterward, the salary drops to $120,000 and will be paid in a lump sum on the annual meeting date.

Cavalier is 66 and some speculate he may be thinking of retiring, though he was said nothing. He is involved with a new Albany public school and a startup, so he’s got other interests.

The Redlands Daily Facts profiles the ESRI chapter of Toastmasters, called ToastMappers, a group aimed at better public speaking. ESRI staffers are asked to speak in public quite a bit, both in-house and at conferences and shows. For those who never picked up the skill by osmosis (or by being tossed into a pond - I learned to speak during my few years in higher education) this is a great option.

I’ll also toss in that at least one Masters in GIS program has a speaking requirement for graduation. I hope they all do or will soon.
