According to the AP, a law that expires in Sept 2007 removes Darpa’s authority to give out prize money for its now famous Darpa challenge for unmanned vehicles to navigate a course in the desert. Instead, there will be trophies. Some teams and team members have dropped out, but Darpa is confident the allure is still there.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (PRI) recieved a gift of $2 million from Sean O’Sullivan, a founder and the first president of MapInfo and member of the class of 1985. The funds are seed moeny for the creation of the Rensselaer Center for Open Software, “an initiative that will support the development of open software solutions to promote civil societies in the United States and across the globe.”

To understand the “Moop” map, you need to know what “moop” is. Moop is “matter out of place,” otherwise known as “trash” on the desert floor (playa). Burning Man folks work hard to return the BLM land to a state at least as clean as they found it after the festival. The Moop Map shows which camps did well in clean up and others that did not so well.
