Jones explained that satellite photography is regulated by international treaties and isn’t restricted by borders. But he added countries restrict the quality of the images taken by commercial satellite companies, which sell data to Google.
“It’s like going from a typewriter to a computer.”

So many GIS products use the open source Geospatial Data Abstract Library (GDAL) to support raster formats, it’s hard to keep the list up to date. But we can now add ESRI’s ArcGIS 9.2 to the list.
