Metro NashvilleТs map server had so many users the organization is now offering a Уtext onlyФ search tool to decrease the pressure. The original tool with maps is an ArcIMS implementation and an article on the topic explains the sluggishness is due to Уan individualТs computerТs ability to handle information from MetroТs property databases.Ф The text version was considerable faster in my quick test. Even before 8 am eastern there were 7 users on the mapping interface. ItТs not clear how many were using the text only version.

IТm aware of ESRIТs mapping offering created with the AP, Maps.com is following suit. The company just launched a new division, Classified Concepts Division. to serve newspapers. Maps.com offers a service to map out open houses, garage sales and the like. Many of its nine users of the service, like the company itself, are in California. The papers report between a У4x and 8x return on investmentФ according to a press release. WeТve got a look at Maps.comТs technology coming up on Friday of this week.

Everyone seems to want to tag their images with GPS coordinates. Unfortunately, itТs still a Уdo it yourselfФ affair for many. DeLorme just released a new tool to use its BlueLogger or EarthMate receivers to take images. I have to believe that very soon this will be a required utility Ц even for recreational GPS receivers.
