Earlier this week the gods of Comdex announced the once-huge IT/electronics conference would be cancelled for 2005. It was also cancelled for 2004. The owners of the event, MediaLive International, Inc. pretty much said, “We are still figuring out how to make it work.”

CSI Wireless is very brave. A recent press release begins this way: УCSI Wireless Inc., a designer and manufacturer of wireless and GPS products used in more than 50 countries, today announced the launch of CSI’s new Web site - designed to be very customer-friendly, with a strong focus on product applications.Ф First off, how many decades ago did most companies realize that redesigning a website was not newsworthy in and of itself? Second, does this suggest that the last one was not customer-friendly? Or was not designed to be customer-friendly? Suggestion: Put up the new website and be quiet about it.

This has to be one of the saddest situations I’ve seen in GIS in some time. The county assessor in Mississippi County Missouri apparently is not providing input the company setting up the GIS. A neighboring county is up and running on an identical system. I do hope there is some small misunderstanding so no one involved ends up with a black eye.

A sensor determines when the 300 gallon capacity solar-powered trash compactor BigBelly is nearly full and radios the company behind it, which in turn can schedule a truck. The idea is to hold more garbage for fewer picksups, saving man power, gas and environmental impacts.

Wow, this is scary. Apparently, those poor souls taking MIS 160 (Systems Development Life Cycle I) at California State University Sacramento have to write an essay in their blogs about GIS. Most (1, 2, 3, 4) are simply lifted (or nearly so) from ESRI’s GIS.com. I suppose that’s the modern day equivalent of writing an essay using the encyclopedia. I suppose this is a good argument for teaching today’s students about the Web as a research tool. And, I am pleased that GIS is part of the curriculum, though I wonder if perhaps having students “play with” online GIS rather than writing about what it is might be more valuable.
