A Sad Map Story from Chicago

What if you made a great map of Chicago neighborhoods? Everyone loved it. It hangs in fire stations and police stations and is sold by Rand McNally. But, then what if you wanted to give it to school children in the city? You'd think that'd be easy, but alas cartographer Christopher Devane ran into Chicago Public Schools system bureaucracy and was eventually issued a and "cease and desist" letter to halt his efforts.

There are two sides to every story. Or every story is more complex than it seems on the surface. I was curious about the map in question, it would be nice to be able to see whether there might be some reason the school board did not want to have the maps.

It turns out that Devane's Big Stick Inc. mapping company has had a falling out with the Chicago Association of Realtors over a version of his map - http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?id=19771 (you can see a small image of the map there).

But guess what? Devane is also a bit of a thorn in the side of the realtors who want to rename (rebrand) neighborhoods. This article tells that story - http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?id=20408

Judging from those articles and this one in the Chicago Tribune (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/chi-0505170217may17,1,2353482.column?coll=chi-navrailnews-nav) I would have to conclude that Mr. Devane is not as much of an underdog as the article about the school board might have you believe.
