Nature Valley and "Google Map-like Interface"

ESRI

Clickz notes another map-based marketing effort, this time from General Mills Nature Valley (think granola) brand. Visitors are encouraged to locate their favorite places in nature and describe them on the "Where's Yours?" website. Clickz describes users tagging "their favorite outdoor spots and submit reviews on a Google Map-like interface."

Yes, it's Google Maps-like. What is it? ESRI ArcWeb Explorer, so far as I can tell. It's got Flash and an ESRI copyright on the data, which to me says ArcWeb services. If I'm right, ESRI needs to think about better branding so it's not just lumped in as "Google Maps-like."

As far as I can tell, the major innovation is the Flash winding-clock icon that indicates the wait for a response from the server instead of the ubiquitous IMS grayscale "Loading" thingy that we've loved all these years.

And while I'm thinking about it, why, in 2006, do I still have to look at the world in the horrible "geographic" projection?

Finally, it's interesting that as one zooms into New Mexico, someone made the cartographic choice to label "Armijo" but not "Albuquerque". As a former Albuquerque resident, I have no idea where this populated place 'Armijo' is or why it should figure so prominently on a regional-scale map.

Maybe the above sounds cranky, but if this is a reflection of the geospatial industry's leader....

Check back in less than 2 weeks - the site will be fited with the ArcWeb Explorer for the map viewer. There will be no more "Loading" thingy and the smooth pan for satellite and roads will hopefully blow you away. It will now be ESRI-like when referring to others mapping technology.
