Too Quiet?

I ran into two things lately that I expected to generate a buzz, but neither did. I'm not sure why.

First, O'Reilly released Google Maps Hacks. I reviewed it a few weeks ago, and there are some reviews on Amazon, but there's nothing like the buzz around Mapping Hacks.

Second, last week Microsoft's Virtual Earth team asked for "votes" on what to do in the next release. That was picked up by few if any blogs.

Hmmm.

While I agree with Jeff Thurston's comments in general, I think the answer here is simply that Google Maps' 15 minutes of fame are over. This fits with the ever-shrinking attention span of Homo Sapiens.

This theory of mine is corroborated by the lifecycle of apps on Ning (ning.com). When Ning first launched last October, there was a slew of Google Maps mashups -- restaurants, nail salons, you name it. 4-5 months later, the buzz has shifted to other areas, like ranking cute pets. Yes, cute pets apps are now far more popular on Ning than Google Maps mashups.

What's your feeling about commercial organizations that participate in kind or cash support to help in disasters and publicize those efforts?
No issues; it's good for the planet and good business.
It's ok, but does make me wonder about their motives.
It's pure marketing, and bothers me.
