Google Signs on with OGC

Google has joined the Open Geospatial Consortium as a principal member.

I think that's just great and applaud the decision of the company to be more involved with standards in general and geospatial ones in particular. Maybe it even helps them not be evil?

This is good news! Although it doesn't guarantee Google will support OGC standards it shows they are interested.

Perhaps I’m alone in this, but I believe the open standards community took a big hit with GoogleMap, GoogleEarth/Keyhole, Whirldwind, Yahoo Maps, and MS Live all of which seem to provide a profound boost to general map graphics on the Internet, but without using open standards, as in “OGC” standards. This could be a timing issue but the general affect is to dilute interest in connected services like WMS, WFS, WCS. That these OWS services may be bypassed by effective de facto standards from the commercial giants leaves us again ... disconnected.

Yup!
In general, I believe open standards are the right way to go when working with information. This idea also applies to Open Document Format and many many other.
So, there is a chance for some interoperability between all those web mapping services.
